we used to be closer than this, Middle Child Theatre

A reunion in the sun. An evening of live cabaret. A celebration of togetherness.

In 2021, the award-winning Middle Child presented we used to be closer than this, a collection of cabaret songs about reconnecting, penned by eight of the most exciting writers from Hull and beyond.

Performed in the open air, under the evening sky in Queen’s Gardens, Middle Child returned to the stage this summer with a toe-tapping, hand-clapping celebration of the human touch.

we used to be closer than this featured songs written by Natasha Brown, Angelo Irving, Tabby Lamb, Jay Mitra, RashDash, Leo Skilbeck, Kobby Taylor and Tom Wells, with original live music by James Frewer.

“Middle Child would be nothing without our audiences, who bring love and energy to each of our performances. We exist to bring people together in a social space to enjoy live theatre. Lockdown took this away from us, but now we’re back and can’t wait to celebrate with you.” – Paul Smith, Artistic Director

Audiences joined a cast of actor-musicians for a summer soiree in one of Hull’s most loved parks, in the heart of the city.
