City Makers, Lydia Caprani

City Makers was part of a series of five window displays made by local artists and commissioned by Absolutely Cultured for Creative Hull in 2021, made in response to the theme of how arts, culture and creativity help to rebuild city centres post-lockdown.

Through the use of bright colours and bold shapes, building blocks rose up to form a playful cityscape, completed with drawings by you!

Artist Lydia Caprani created an exciting, illustrated window vinyl to represent the energising of the city’s streets, encouraging local people to come together and get creative. Bringing together unused designs for the Creative Hull branding designed by the artist, members of the public were asked to grab a window pen and draw a miniature self-portrait carrying blocks, pencils and paint brushes, working together to ‘build’ the pre-existing illustration.

“Come down to Whitefriargate to not only say hello but get involved in the design itself! Grab a window marker and join me in transforming a window into a truly Creative Hull cityscape with hand-drawn self-portraits. All ages, abilities, and friendly faces welcomed – I look forward to meeting you!” – Lydia Caprani

City Makers was a playful and interactive window installation which invited residents of all ages and abilities to bring life to the illustration, building Hull back together.
