In March 2020 we launched the Creative Micro-Commission Programme, offering £350 to creative practitioners across Hull and the North of England. The aim is to produce a new work, from any discipline, within the limits of working under current social distancing measures. The programme is designed to enable artists to respond and create new work quickly, encouraging the space and freedom to try out new ideas and ways of creating work for online presentation.
We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who applied. The submissions were wonderfully varied, both in discipline and artist location which is very exciting.
Initially we planned to commission six new pieces but, due to the overwhelming response, we’re pleased to announce we increased the selection to eight pieces. Each artist’s commission will be a feature on our digital channels and will be hosted on our website.
Here are the selected artists:
A multi-disciplinary artist who utilises the camera and various tools of the cinema and theatre to create dream worlds filled with Gothic horror and surreal humour.
A design researcher, collaborative thinker and visual storyteller who works across a range of projects including, graphics, installation, publication and public art.
Daniel is a theatre maker whose work is funny, direct and gets its hands dirty in the big questions about how we live together in this world. In all of his shows, he looks to reimagine how the theatrical event encounters and involves its audience.
Jessica El Mal
ElMal Art engages in a multidisciplinary practice addressing global structures of power through critical and historical research, and speculative future imaginaries. Often centered around collaboration, co-curation and collective knowledge systems, ElMal Art projects usually include research, workshops and artwork, intended to have lasting effect.
Louise is a professional poet and inter-disciplinary artist based in the North of England. In 2019 she became a Director of Write Out Loud and associate artist at Wigan STEAM.
Lydia Caprani is a graphic artist inspired by vernacular design and folk art. She is interested in decoration being applied to all; stemming from a personal conviction that societies have always used visual forms to express cultural identity, communicate and create.
Stewart Baxter is a musician, composer, photographer and designer based in Hull where he plays drums in the international touring band LIFE and works as an artist within the community in Hull and across the UK.
Tom is a choreographer and performance artist from Lancashire. His practice deconstructs choreography and character, accessed through exhaustive actions concerning physical and mental strain.
Stay tuned to our social channels to find out more about when the completed works will go live.
