Absolutely Cultured welcomes new chair: Qaisar Mahmood
We are delighted to announce that Qaisar Mahmood has been appointed as chair of Absolutely Cultured.
Bringing over 20 years’ experience in the education and not-for-profit sector, Qaisar takes over from Lee Pitcher who has stepped down from his role as Chair as he undertakes a new challenge as MP for Doncaster East and the Isle of Axholme.
Qaisar’s career highlights include chartering an airline and conducting a lesson for 90 students at 37,000 feet – the highest classroom in the world.
Marianne Lewsley-Stier, Artistic Director and CEO of Absolutely Cultured said: “I am delighted to welcome Qaisar to the Absolutely Cultured team and am looking forward to working with him over the coming years.
“Qaisar has a proven track record of leading organisations that deliver outstanding and impactful cultural events, and he also has a wealth of governance experience under his belt.”
“His background in education and community cohesion will be invaluable to deepen the connections with communities in the city and to continue to develop our engagement across different audiences.
Qaisar Mahmood said: “I am very excited to have been appointed chair of Absolutely Cultured and to be joining a very able and dedicated team. This is a key moment in the charity’s direction and I am excited about the future plans of Absolutely Cultured. The city of Hull is close to my heart – I have spent some time working in schools in Hull and many a day visiting the wonderful eateries and cafes on the waterfront.
“During these times of financial difficulty and with mental health issues on the increase, culture plays a pivotal role in bringing joy into people’s lives, and provides an opportunity to collaborate and share experiences.
“I am looking forward to working with the fabulous arts and cultural groups that exist in the city and region, and most importantly, to sitting with groups and listening to the ideas and the creativity that exists in the city.
“I truly believe that culture and place-based projects can be a key driving force for change, enhancement and development for people and communities. This coupled with creativity, education, opportunity and tourism can be truly transformational in changing lives and having a positive social impact.”
Lee Pitcher, outgoing chair, said: “During my three-year term, I have been proud to see some wonderful arts programming, from interactive inflatables to a dance circus adventure, as well as the introduction of important initiatives such as INTER_CHANGE artist development programme.
“I know the organisation is in safe hands with Qaisar as my successor and I’m excited to see what’s next under his leadership.”
Marianne Lewsley-Stier said: “I’d like to thank Lee Pitcher for his dedication to Absolutely Cultured, he has made a valuable contribution to Hull’s cultural life and I wish him well for the future.”
